THE VETO CONFERENCE.
SPEECH BY MR HALDANE. United Press Association—By .Electrio Telegraph—Copyright.
LONDON, November 6.
Mr Haldane, speaking at Oxford, said that whether tho Voto Conference failed or not its influence was for good. It was desirable that tho great parties should approach each other and como closer together on certain subjects. These- approaches were always tentative, and might, not succeed, hut they were never made without some result, and what was obscure became to some extent translucent.
'THE VETO CONFERENCE. (Received November 8, 12.40 a.m.) LONDON, November 7.
The “Times"’ states that if as a result of the conference tho party leaders can jointly recommend tho House of Commons to accept proposals for a compromise it is probable that tho support they will receive will outweigh tho casting voto of tho Irish members with whom the Labour Party may act. Tho “Chronicle” hints that Mr Asquith is anxious to submit to a Cabinet council to-morrow, a tentative proposal for settlement by consent thereafter enabling him to take a decisive line at the conference.
