BAND CONTEST.

[Per Press Association.] WANGANUI, March 17. The first test contest took place last evening. For “13 ” grade bands the result was Nelson, 128 points; Wanganui City, 124; Gisborno City, 11J; Cambridge, 118 ;• Wellington Tramways, 117; Waitara, 115; Blenheim, 10b; Feilding, 105; Manaia, 102; Opunake, 91). In tho first grade contest Wanganui Garrison scored 120 points and letone 76. , Tho band contest was continued today. The gate takings amounted to £350. Twelve bands competed in the quick-step competition. "Wanganui Garrison carried off first prize with a total of 285? points. Of these 101 l were for music. Blenheim was second with 283 points, 122 being for music. Petone came third with 205 points, 126 being for music. Others finished as follows:—Nelson 261?, Wanganui City 253, Manaia 247?, Gisborno 247?, Cambridge 243, "Wellington Tramways 233, Waitara 232?, Feilding 223], Opunake 217. During tho afternoon Air Janies Crichton” was presented with a gold medal to commemorate tlio fact that he was conductor of the finest performance by any massed bands in New Zealand, that at the garden party on Tuesday. Air Maurice Cohen was presented with a handsome oil painting on the occasion of resigning the presidency of the North Island Brass Band Association, after holding office for twelve years.

This evening the quartet competition took place. There were only four competitors. Results : —Nelson • 132, Wanganui No. 1 129, Wanganui No. 2 121, Gisborne 107.

The annual meeting of the North Island Brass Band Association was hold this evening, fifty delegates being present. Mr Louis Cohen was elected president. Messrs Holben and Cliarkes were re-elected secretary and treasurer respectively; time-keeper, Mr J. Hunter; executive, Alessrs J. T. Aluir, J. Trussed (Wanganui) Pederson (Marton), Haybittle (Feilding), M’Connell (Waitara), Patchott and Jupp (Wellington), Jones, Pringle and Mounsey (Palmerston North). Tho disqualification” of five Wellington players whp applied was removed. It was decided to make no change in the grading system. The next contest is to be held in Palmerston North, Gisborne’s claims for the 1912 contest to bo favourably considered.
