THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR. > Sir.—l notice that Mr Allison is claiming the support of the electors on various grounds, which seem to me, upon examination, to involve , themselves into one, viz., that during his term of office be has carried out and put in hand certain ’ municipal undertakings. He enumerates the tepid swimming baths, the municipal organ, the new sanitary conveniences, the water supply works for Central Linwood and St Albans wards, pushed on a loan, sanctioned the completing the Sydenham water schome. down, to some improvements undescribed in the municipal abattoir. What had Mr Allison to do with the tepid swimming baths? Only to resign from the committee that was 6et up by the Council. Or the city organ, or water supply, or, in fact, with any other reform he mentions? I know that our ex-Mayor, Mr Payling, deserves the credit for many of the above reforms, not Mr Allison. A<* regards the water power scheme, that Mr Allison views with doubt. 1 along -with a great many more electors agree in thinking that it is not to the credit of the Council that during these seven years no forward step has been taken in this matter, which is,of vital importance to our manufacturing interests and to the country at large. I notice that the Mayor has attended' 498 meetings—l suppose for the pur}>ose of moulding the policy of the City Council. -Well, if this moulding ,waS intended to block progress, Mr Allison has succeeded. Mr Allison must find better reasons for bis re-election, and must not take credit to himself that is not due to him. When contesting the mayoralty election against Mr Payliing ne said no mayor should hold office longer than one year. I quite agree with him. I think I am voicipg the opinion of the majority of the 1 electors when I say that the time has' arrived when we should infuse new blood into our City Council and Mayoral chair. —I am, etc., NIMROD.
