THE AKAROA EXCURSION.

TO THE EDITOR

Sir, —I am glad there are others who have, like myself, sought your assistance to ventilate the occurrence of Monday last at the boat race. I should like to know what the three or four constables were doing when tho Cygnet left the pier to follow the race,, with about 600 on. Tho little look-out was crowded and the vessel laboured, so heavily that I asked my friends in consternation if it was not exceedingly dangerous. If a swell had arisen many lives would have been lost, as there were not lifebelts to half supply tho crowded passengers. I, with others, left with the launch at five o’clock for French Farm, and as we passed the Cygnet, the same crowding was apparent. lam somewhat anxious to learn in what condition they arrived at Lyttelton. Why do the constables not do their duty in tho face of such imminent danger?—l am, etc., SPECTATOR. ,
