SANATORIUM SATURDAY.

PUBLIC COLLECTIONS. THE CITY r S~RESPONSE. £263 2s 2id COLLECTED. In accordance with arrangements, large numbers of ladies went out into tho City on Saturday _ with collection , boxes to obtain subscriptions for the Consumptive Sanatorium. The brigade of lady volunteers numbered about thirty-five, together with a dozen hospital nurses. Leaving tho City Council Chambers at 10 a.m., they took up positions in central sites, and sought subscriptions from passers-by. In the afternoon the ladies assembled and attended the ceremony in connection with the unveiling of the Rolleston statue, and took up positions in Worcester Street and Montreal Street. They took the collection boxes amongst tho crowds at th© ceremony, and obtained large numbers of subscriptions. Mr A. Evans, the secretary to the committee, made, a tour of the stations between 1 p.m. and 1.30 p.ra., and placed the money received in largo boxes. The ladies continued their efforts until 5 pirn., when six members of the Christchurch Fire Brigade took the project in hand, and mad© a determined canvass of the city. It had been decided that uo badges should be given to those who subscribed, bub that decision was departed from daring the day, and many people were seen on tho streets wearing a small piece of red braid, indicating that they bad helped the Sanatorium Committee in its work. Tile following are the sums collected at the different stations; —

The money was received as follows: —Cheque £l, note £l. gold £27 10s, half-crowns, florins and shillings £lB2 3s, sixpenny and threepenny pieces £-15, copper £6 9a 2d. As the money collected will carry a Government subsidy of 24s in th© £, Saturday’s effort will result in augmenting the funds of toe Sanatorium Committee hy £578 16s sd. Mr H. J. Beswksk, chairman of the committee, informed a reporter last night that the sum collected fell below his expectations. He thought that the response front the city would result in a considerably large sum being collected.
