FIRES.
[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, February 26. • A fire at Parnell this morning destroyed the bakery of Mr Montgomery’; Manukau Road. Some damage was done to the residence attached.
On Thursday night Mr E. Wilder’s residence, at Ngaparu, Fernside, narrowly escaped being burnt down. A fire waa left in the drawing-room when the family retired, and a stick must have fallen out and set fire to the carpet. In the morning the room was found full of s'lnoke, and the floor in front of the fireplace was burning. The flames wore quenched with a few buckets of water, and it was then seen that a large hole had been burnt through the floor, the thick carpet and hearth rug having evidently prevented the lire from spreading. The place is insured with tho Victoria Insurance Company. A quantity of tow in an old flax-mill shed on Mr J. LiHey’s property, at Kangiorn, caught fire last evening, and the brigade was called out.'® The damage wag not very serious. The lire was caused by a: small boy playing with matches.
