THE RIVAL CABLES.
PROPOSAL FOR A JOINT PURSE. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, Feb. 18. The Postmaster-General states that the proposal for a joint purse in connection with the Pacific Cable and the Eastern Extension Company was first mooted at a conference held in Sydney during the Commonwealth festivities, at which Mr Seddon was present. The proposal did not take a definite shape until several weeks later, when the Victorian Cabinet, at the instance of Sir George Turner, decided to approach the Queensland and New Zealand Governments. Mr Seddon has since replied in the affirmative, but Mr Philp has been again communicated with. Should Queensland agree Victoria will then become a party to the Cape Cable agreement. It is nob known how the Eastern Extension Company will act in the matter.
