SIR JOHN HALL'S GIFT TO THE CITY COUNCIL.
AN ENLARGED ENGRAVING OF THE QUEEN. At the City Council meeting last evening, a letter was read from Sir Joint Hall, asking the Council to accept from him an engraving of a well-known, portrait of the late Queen. The original painting at Windsor was by Angeli* and was understood to be the one which her Majesty had preferred to any. When he (Sir John Hall) had been in England lately, he had applied for permission, to have made for presentation to the New Zealand Parliament, the copy of this likeness, which had lately, been exhibited in the Art Gallery of the Exhibition. The Queen, on learning that the copy was intended for New Zealand, had not only kindly granted the request, but had sent the original painting from Windsor to London, to facilitate, the work of the copyist. This circumstance -might, perhaps, attach for the City Council some additional interest to ths engraving.
The engraving, which is substantially framed, stands about three feet six inches high,' and makes a very handsome picture. The Council decided to- send a letter, thanking Sir John Hall for his generous gift, and the Clerk was instructed to have the picture hung in the Council Chamber,
