NEW BRIGHTON GALA.
THE PROGRAMME. PROMISE OF A SUCCESSFUL ' GATHERING. A meeting of the General Committee which is controlling the arrangements for the New_ Brighton Gala was held on Monday evening. The Mayor of New Brighton (Mr C. H. Winny) -presided. Mr C. J. Marshall, the treasurer, reported that the Finance Committee had received the following donations and trophies towards the prize fund:—His Worship the Mayor (Mr 0. H. Winny) £1 Is, Mr G. King 10s 6d, Messrs James Shand and Co. £1 Is, Mr H. Mace £T, Messrs Fletcher, Humphreys and! Co. £2 2s, 'Messrs Manning and Co. £2 2s, Mr F. Mulholland 10s, Mr R. C. Bishop 10s 6d, Mr J. Carl 10s 6d, Mr R. Bickertcn 10s, Warner’s Hotel £1 Is, Mr Whittle ss, Mr A. Loughrey 10s, Mr H. R. Walker 10s 6d, Mr G. Slater 10s 6d, Messrs Ashby, Bergh and Co. trophy, Messrs Eslick Bros, pipe, Mr J. Preece pair of trousers, Mr W. M. Gibb painting, Mrs Packham case of apples, Messrs William White and Co. half-ton of coal, Mr Kincaid lajge tin of lollies, Messrs G. Jones and Sons trinkets to the value of 30s, Messrs Bruce and Jensen box of tea, Mr M’Cormack trophy value 10s, Mr Hooker ss, Mr H. James £2 2s for cycling events, and Mr F. Haynes £1 Is towards the Bahy Show which is to take place on the Pier during the afternoon. The Secretary (Mr E. J. Righton) reported that the executive had drawn np a programme of athletic, cycling and novelty events, and that a large number.of entries had been received, and there was every promise of a good day’s sport; also that he had arranged for a' portion of the decorations that had been used in connection with the Jubilee celebrations in Christchurch, and had secured the necessary poles and material. It was decided thitb Sea View Road, from George Street to the Pier should be decorated. Messrs Winny and Shand were instructed to obtain a large quantity of bunting for further decoration purposes. In addition .to the donations, the sum of £3 was voted for the purchase of children’s toys and prizes. The Secretary reported having ■ arranged for a band and a Punch and Judy show, and that a merry-go-round and other amusements and side-shows would he on the beach. It was decided to have the finish of the events near to the.. Pier, and -that the band should he on the .Pier, ‘which could he used as a good vantage ground from which to view the races and other amusements. The officials for the meeting were appointed. On the recommendation of the executive, it was decided.to have a baby show, with' two classes,'one for haVes under twelve months, and the other for children under two years, and to give prizes-' of £1 Is for fir : t and 10s 6d to the second in- each class. Mesdames Winny, Marshall and Walker' were appointed as the judges, and it was decided that the judriu? should take place on the Pier between 3.50 and 4 pirn. The School Committee, with the addition of Mr. Hiddlestone, were appointed as the Children’s Committee, to conduct the races for the juveniles. , The committee in charge of the evering entertainment reported having , arranged for -the erect:on of a stage, and that good entries had been received 1 .for the Highland Hornpipe and Irish Jig dancing, and also for the comic song, recitation and other comp°tirions. , The following handicaps have been declared for the athletic events to be decided at the New Brisrlitoni Gala next Thursday:— CASH EVENTS.
