PUBLIC OPINION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As you say in your article on “ Public Opinion,” there is no doubt that public opinion, and I might add agitation which is the outcome of public opinion, has done a great deal to bring about some very desirable reforms. We had the best Bills passed when we had the greatest agitation, when the “Lyttelton Times” often had two or three columns of letters in the paper every day, or, in other words, when public opinion had a show. The Pensions for the Aged Bill would never have been passed but for the persistent agitation carried on in the newspapers. The “Lyttelton Times” assisted the cause very greatly. It lays to the editors, or those behind the throne, as to whether we have good legislation or otherwise. When letters are kept back, if inserted at all, until they can do no good, then public opinion is stifled, and the public are accused of apathy.—l am, etc., FREE DISCUSSION.
