HALSWELL DRAINAGE SCHEME.
A meeting for providing better draitMge for the Halswell LI and L2 districts, was held on Friday night at Tai Tapu. .There was a moderate attendance. Mr R. Rainey presided. The Chairman in his remarks stated that several, meetings had been held previously, and considerable interest had been taken in the matter, but all previous efforts to form Halswell into a drainage district had failed, and the correspondence between the Board of Advice to the Selwyn County Council contained some valuable advice, but the Council seemed to have always put the matter off by asking for schemes of the drainage. The Chairman spoke adversely of the Council having control of the Halswell drainage, seeing that it was largely interested in irrigation, and in all probability would be the controlling body. He explained the special features of the River Board Act, regarding the formation of the district, rating and powers. After some discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr Neale —“That a committee be appointed to take the necessary steps for the formation of a river board district, as to the boundaries, &c., ah<jl to submit the information at the future meeting.” The following were appointed a committee.
to arrange matters in connection with the scheme: —Messrs Neale, Rainey, M’Drury, Ward, Miliar, Buchanan, John Murray, jnn., M’Donald, Thomas, Henley, Peryman and Sinclair. It was decided that the committee should have power to add to its number if necessary, and that the next public meeting should be held at Tai Tapu. Votes of thanks to the Chairman and Mr Neale closed the meeting.
