WELLINGTON, Maecb Si. Another attempt is to be made to develop gold-mining at Terawhiti. Fourteen or fifteen years ago gold was washed out of the creeks there, but all endeavours to find the reefs from which it came failed. A year or two ago two reefs were discovered, and a syndicate has now been formed to work them if the tests prove them to be payable. At the sitting of the Native Appellate Court, at Wellington, on April 13 an application will be made to quash an order relating to Block 14, Horowhenua, on the ground that it was made without jurisdio tion. s>, The Nelson Gaol is to be closed.t Eight prisonersand two warders will be brought across to Wellington, and the remaining three prisoners will be transferred to Hokitika.

Mr A. Stuart Menteath has been appointed acting French consul at Wellington during Count D’Abbans’ absence. Eevised regulations are published in the Gazette for commissions in the army open to officers of the local military forces or university students. Two are allotted to each colony. The Public Trustee gives notice that he claims an unoccupied section of fifty acres at Pukekura, Auckland. Mr Bauchope, chairman of the Taranaki Education Board, has consented to be nominated- to the Council of Victoria College. Mr T. W. Kirk has discovered phylloxera in a vinery at Carterton.
