ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

Walter Stott, town clerk of Green Island- was accidentally drowned this afternoon while bathing at Taieri ' Mouth, where he had gone as one of a picnic party. -■ , Late on Saturday night, as one of the shunting engines at Lyttelton was drawing a line of loaded waggons on to the weighing; machine, those in charge of the engine heard; the groans of a man on the groiind. A search revealed the fact that a sailor, who,-is known only as Victor, and who belongs to tbe schooner Maud Graham, Lad been run over by the waggons. The, wheels bad.passed over bis left leg, and it was in a very mangled state. The unfortunate fellow was not seen by those conducting the work until his groans attracted their attention. He was conveyed to the casual ward, where the limb was amputated by Dr Pairman. The sufferer was in an unconscious state the whole of yesterday. It is thought that he had attempted to pass between two. waggons as the shunter was slowly drawing them up to pass over the weighbridge. .
