RIFLE SHOOTING.
The fourth competition for the trophy presented to the Ashburton Eifle Club by Mr G. A. M. Buckley took place on Thursday afternoon. The conditions were seven shots each at ■ 200yds, 300yds and 500yds. The following are the seven highest scores;—B. Salek (scr), 70 ; D. Grant (scr), 67; E. E. Tasker (scr), 64; W. S. Mitchell (scr), 62; A. M’Kay (scr), 59; J. Forbes (5), 59; T. Eeveli (3), 59. The points gained so far are as follows (twenty-one having to be made to win the prize) : —D. Grant, W. S. Mitchell and E. E. Tasker fifteen points each, J. E. Colyer eleven, T. Eavell ten, S. Salok and J. C. Cheeseman eight, G. W. Braddell seven, James Wilson, John Wilson and J. Forbes four, E. Donn, H. Leggatt and A. M’Key three, G. Morrison two.
A match was fired on Thursday afternoon on the Waimate range between the local corps and a team from the Timaru Navals. Waimate won by 109 points. The following are the scores:—Waimate Rifles— Sergeant Saunders 79, Captain Grant 70, Color-Sergeant Inkster 69, Private A. Inkster 67, Sergeant Guy 67, Corporal Jackson 63, Private Manchester 59, Private Williams 58, Lieutenant Coltman 58 and Private Bateman 56; total 646. Timaru Navals —Petty-Offioer Waugh 71, Gunner Burford 71, Petty-Officer Stephens* 64, Gunner Pearson 60, Potty-Officer Hathaway 55, Gunner Neich 55, Gunner Hill 49, Petty-Officer Toneycliffe 44, Chief Petty-Officer Bradley 38 and Petty-Officer Simpson SO; total -537.
