UNIVERSITY SENATE.

_ The University Senate continued its sittings at the hall of Canterbury College yesterday morning at ten o'clock; present —The Chancellor (in the chair), the ViceChancellor, Professors Scott, F„ D. Brown, Shand, Sals, Cook, and J. M. Brown, Sir J. Prendergast, the Most Eev the Primate, Sir E. Stout, Dr Fitchett, Eevs Dr Salmond, J. Paterson and W. J. Habeas, tho Hon C. C. Bowen and Mr Giles.

Sir'R. Stout brought up two reports of the committee on law questions and the appointment of examiners on subjects of New Zealand law. Consideration of these reports was made ■an order of the day for nest sitting-day. The Vice-Chancellor brought up a report of tho Business Committee, recommending the following as the constitution of the committees ordered by the Senate : —On a resolution regarding tho late Dr Stuart —The Vice-Chancellor, Eov Dr Salmond, Eev J. Paterson and Sir E. Stout. On reports of affiliated institutions oa the minutes of convocation; on the correspondence with tho Hon the Minister of Education, on the resolutions of the Educational Institute and on the term, keeping and notices of candidature of students iu engineering—tho Vice-Chancellor, Professors J. M. Brown, F, D. Brown, Sals and Cook, the Eev W. J, Habons and Hon C. C . Boweu (chairman). On authors and periods and oa English for honours in 1897—Professor Sale (chairman), Most Eev Dr Eadwood, Most Eev Dr Cowie, Professor J. M. Brown and Mr Milne. On the correspondence with the agent in England, and on the division of the papers in- English and German—Tho Eev Dr Salmond (chairman), Professor J. M. Brown, Sir G. M. O’Eorko and Mr Hay. On the appointment of Examiners in England (including engineering), and on the Exhibition of 1851 Science Scholarships The ViceChancellor (chairman). Professors Cook, F, D. Brown and Shand and the Eev J. Paterson. On the Appointment of Examiners in New Zealand (except in law) — The Eev W. J. Habcns (chairman) Professor Scott, Hon G. C. Bowen, Hon Dr Grace, Sir E. Stout and Mr Giles. Oa Finance Professor' Shand (chairman), Professor Cook, Hon Dr Grace, Sir J. Prendergast, Messrs Hay and Milne. Oa applications for ad eundem degrees — Most Eev Dr Cowio (chairman), Most Eev. Dr Eedwood, the,Vice-Chancellor, and Professor J.M. Brown. On the resolutions of tho Auckland Graduates’ Association—The Most Eev Dr Cowie (chairman), Professors Shand and Cook, Eevs W. J. Habeas and J. Paterson. On Framing of Statutes—Eev W. J. Habeas (chairman), Sir J. M. O’Eorke, Professor Sale, Eev Dr Salmond and Mr Milne. On the motion of the Vice-chancellor, it was resolved —" That the recommendations of the committee be agreed to.” Professor Sale moved—“ That Laurence Frederick Watkins be recorded aa having now passed all the intermediate examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Music.”

The motion was agreed to. On the motion of the Hon C. C. Bowen, it was resolved —“ That the Chancellor be requested to express the regret of the University of New Zealand that it is unable to assist in the work of the British School of Archaeology at Athens—a work in which it takes the greatest interest. Aa an examining body with very limited funds the University has no means at its disposal for such an object,” Mr Giles moved—" That it is desirable that steps should be taken to bring into effect the provisions of Section 25 of the University’Act, by offering certificates of proficiency in various branches of knowledge to persons who shall have prosecuted the study of such branches, and that a committee ,be appointed to consider the best mode of giving effect to this resolution.”

Sir E. Stout moved aa an amendment—- “ That the consideration of this question be postponed until the report of the committee on tho correspondence with the Minister of Education is before the Senate,” , , Tho amendment was agreed to.

On the motion of the Rev J. Paterson it was resolved the Senate has learned with satisfaction that a University College has been established for the middle district of New Zealand, and hopes that steps will be immediately taken by the Government to properly equip and endow the college. (2) That the foregoing resolution be forwarded to the Hon the Minister of Education.” Sir Eobert Stout moved—" That it be referred to a committee, consisting of the Chancellor, Professor Cook, Professor Shand, Professor F, W, Brown, Hon 0. C. Bowen, the Eev W. J. Habens and the mover, to consider the programme of agricultural studies that should be followed and tho examinations that should he passed to entitle a student to a certificate in agriculture or to the degree of Bachelor of Science (in Agriculture).” The motion was carried, and the Senate adjourned until 2 p.m. The afternoon was taken up with .the further consideration of the Chancellor’s annual address.
