CHRISTCHURCH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
An ordinary meeting of the Committee of the Christchurch Horticultural Society was held last evening j present—Mr H. R. Webb (President) in the chair. Dr Irving, and Messrs S. Anstey, W. Jones, R. £. M. Evans, J. Guntrip, S. Brooking, S. P. Wilson, J. G. Blyfeh, H. Clark, W. Willcox and T. Gordon (Secretary). Tho Secretary reported that the receipts at the late Bose Show had amounted to £l7 16s, and tho expenditure to £42, leaving a debit balance of £24 4s. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Jones, seconded by Mr Brooking, that the Secretary should send a letter of thanks to those ladies and gentlemen who sent specimens for exhibition only at the Rose Show. Mr J. Joyce exhibited two specimens of variegated cocksfoot and poplar. In reply to the Chairman, Mr Joyce said that a few years ago he found a cocksfoot plant which contained variegated leaves. He took the plant and cultivated it, and from the seed got a number of variegated plants. The varied gated poplar waa from the cutting of an ordinary tree which grow in hia garden. Mr Joyce, gardener to Mrs Rhodes, Elmwood, then read a paper on “ Gardening in Now Zealand.” At the close a discussion took place, and Mr Joyce waa accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
