LAKE ELLESMERE.
TO THE EDXIOB. Sib,— Few people can form any idea what a benefit the reclamation of the lake would be to the whole community. The settlement of about three hundred families means over one thousand souls. In addition to the increase of oar exports, the demand on our local market for boots, groceries, &e., &c., to supply the population, would bo of great benefit to all interested in business. The settlement of the lake will be a benefit to the Colony, and a« such should receive the support of the Government. I believe, if a Bill was brought before the House dealing with this question, without infringing on the iniierest of the extension of the railway to Akaros, it would receive a large support. I cannot agree with my old friend 1 Mr John Woodward about placing logs of wood or bundles of manuka on the beach at Taumutu to keep but the sea. It w«ulcl take ail the spare bush at Little River to do this. Mr Woodward had better allow them to take the wood home for firewood than see it scattered on the Ninety-mile Beach. It would only be throwing money away to attempt a partial reclamation. The sea water must be kept out. I have had the pleasure of conversing with members of the House on tbo subject who expressed their willingness to give the subject their attention and support. In the meantime, let us keep on agitating in this direction, so long as you are good enough to give us space in your valuable columns.—l am, <tc.. PROGRESS.
