THE PAPANUI TRAM.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—-I am informed that the manage* ment of the tramways are considering an alteration of fares on the Papanui line, and intend charging twopence for the whole or any part of the Journey. By this altera* tion a passenger to the North belt will hare to pay the same fare as one who rides to Papanui. Judging from the annual reports of the Company, it is obvious that they oannnot afford to cause dissatisfaction among a largo number _of their patrons, or to invito competition. The above arrangement is moat unfair, inasmuch that the residents of Papanui and northern towns derive an unasked for benefit at tho expense of the residents nearer town. The present system of penny sections has given satisfaction to the travelling public, each ride being considered well worth the fare. The reduced fares to aud from Papanui will not increase the number of passengers, and the Company will now lose a penny on each passenger. If passengers now have to pay 2d to the belt, the Company will find a decrease in the number of passengers and will be ** burning the candle at both ends,” by losing on the passengers to Papanui and. by carrying fewer passengers to the but and immediate vicinity. The travelling public are not so fond of the trams as to pay an exorbitant fare, and will, I am sure, support any opposition conveyance..—l am, &c; WALKEE.
