Addition is being extensively signed in the pity to-day in favour of the passing of the Auckland Electric Lighting Bill. ■WELLINGTON, August 13.
The Northern Bowling Association held its first meeting hero to-night, when the following Bowling Clubs were represented Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Nelson, Wanganui, Palmerston,. New Plymouth and Blenheim. Mr C. D. Barraud (Wellington) was elected President of the Association, Mr T. Morrison (Napier) Vice-President, and Mr Lambert (Wellington) Hon Secretary and Treasurer. Ic was decided that the Napier tournament next Easter be held under the auspices of the Northern Bowling Association. Rules for tho new Association were adopted, and nearly all the amendments seat by the Nelson Club were agreed to. The Picturesque Atlas cases were adjourned by consent for a fortnight. The Government has granted tho request of the men on the relief works near Pahiatuatp have an independent survey of the work? done, they alleging that the measurements' of the Government officer aro incorrect. A sharp earthquake shook was felt at nine minutes to two o'clock this morning, it was like a quick jerk from west to east. Two less pronounced shocks have been felt at intervals during the last five days. DUNEDIN, August 13.
Thomas House, boatswain of the ship Clan M'Leod, who has been acting as second mate, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for assaulting Captain Wuitney, of the same ship. The first mate, in his evidence, said it was he who “operated" on the captain, and that House had only separated them. Other witnesses confirmed the captain’s story that House had kicked him on the face and head and caused him to fall to the bottom of the stairs.
The Premier, in acknowledging the resolutions in favour of conferring the franchise on women passed at the recent public meeting, expresses the hope that a measure conferring the privilege on women will become law this session. INVERCARGILL, August 13.
A petition signed by seventy miners of Coal Island has been forwarded to the Government asking for the resumption of a monthly mail service. Splendid returns are being obtained on the ground. Four boys broke into tho Primitive Methodist Church last night and attempted to open a safe. They wera disturbed and caught by the police. A prosecution will follow.
Mr John Rosa, father of Mr Boss of Sargood, Son and Ewen,, died at Greenhills yesterday, aged one hundred and two years. He enjoyed good health until recently, but his eyesight had gradually gone until he became blind.
