IMPERIAL POLITICS.
TRADE OF THE EMPIRE. [Special to Press Association,] [Eeceived June 21, at 6.10 p.m.J LONDON, Junb 20. A Reputation from' the Empire Trade League waited upon' the Premier to-day, urging the Government to renounce commercial treaties which prevent tho Colonies giving preference to British trade; also to convene a conference fo consider the question of establishing a closer commercial union between Great Britain and the colonies. In reply, the Marquis of Salisbury said the provisions complained of must not lack attention, but at the same time the Government had to bear in mind that the treaties contained much which was highly valuable to British trade, and it was impossible to renounce them piecemeal. He, however, promised that the Government would take any chance which offered itself to withdraw from unfortunate engagements, and they were hopeful of being in a position to shortly mitigate the existing evil. In concluding the Premier pointed out to the deputation that the League must abandon sentiment, state its policy, and endeavour to impress the country therewith.
