It is denied on authority that the Prince of Wales is in any way concerned in the election of Mr Arthur Stanley Wilson, one of the defendants in the baccarat case, as a member of the Marlborough Club. [Received June 21, at 6.10 p.m.] A VALUABLE TROPHY. Mr M‘Eachera, a Victorian, has presented a cup value 100 guineas to he contested for by teams from the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and London and Scottish Volunteers, at the National Rifle Association meeting at Bisley. MADAME MELBA. Madame Melba, to mark her thanks and her sympathy with Australia, has decided to present a bust of herself, by Foifard, to the Melbourne Public Library. DOCTOR OF LAWS. Professor Pennefather, of Adelaide, has successfully passed the Doctor of Laws examination at Cambridge University. TUSSAUD’S EXHIBITION BURNED. Louis Tussaud’s Exhibition has been destroyed by fire. [The Exhibition was of a similar nature to that of Madame Tussaud: wax figure portraits, historic or notable dresses and accessories.]
POPULATION OF SCOTLAND. The census returns of Scotland show the total population to be 4,033,000. The population of the City of Glasgow is 792,000. [The population of Scotland in 1881 was 3,735,573, and the population of Glasgow was 674,095.]
MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL. The first section of the Manchester ship canal, commenced in November, 1887, was opened to-day. [Work on this gigantic undertaking, which is to practically convert Manchester into a seaport, was begun on Nov. 11, 1887, on the Cheshire side of the Mersey.]
