Sporting Notes.

[By Peeping Tom.]

Glancing through the weights issued by Mr Dowse for the Anniversary meeting at Dunedin, the name of Jack Harkaway strikes me as being the beat in for the hurdle race. In his absence Rebel ought to beat all the rest. I like Jane Eyre and Cactus for the Anniversary Handicap, and Stimulant or Clarissa ought to account for the Cliffs.

Several letters have lately appeared in the Daily Times criticising the performances of Hippomenes at the late Autumn meeting, and gently hinting that the horse’s running was inconsistent. I can only say that I have carefully watched the -running of Hippomenes since he was bought out of a selling race by Messrs Stephenson and Hazlett at Christchurch, and the horse’s performances has fully convinced me that he is not a stayer beyond a mile. There are many horses that can gallop at a phenomenal pace up to a certain distance, after that they could not head a cart horse. Ido not wish to class Hippomenscs as one of the latter, but I believe with horses of his own class in a mile and a half race, where the pace is sound throughout that the last half-mile will find out a soft place in the son of St Leger and Atlanta. Hence, he may win a mile race in fast time, and make no show at all when pitted against the same horses over a mile and a half.

There are wretched poor entries for the Errick races. Outram ought to win one or both of the Handicaps. If he is beaten it will be by Frances. The following Sires’ stock were much in evidence at the late V. R. C. Meeting:—Newminster, Trenton, Malua, Ingomar and Carbine. The two last named had but one winner each, viz., Hova and Wallace, a nice pair of Neddy’s they are too, but the' Trenton mare Quiver is po slouch.
