Bannockburn.

(lake county press correspondent). March 9th.

Like our friends the Americans, we like to keep up to date, and for cheek and coolness our last robbery here surpassed any previous performs nee of the kind that we have had. On the night of the 31st, a heap of quartz belonging to Mr Evan Joner, was run through a sluice-box by some persons, as yet unknown. The robbery was well planned. A branch race from the Garrick waterrace, which has not been used for about 12 months was cleaned out at least two days previous, and the water turned on about 6 o’clock on Saturday night. The quartz, about 20 tons, was then shoveled in to, a box, which was made out of timber that was on the ground. The free gold contained in the heap was estimated at about lOozs. Altogether it means a loss of about £l5O to the owners.

Cur cricket team did not journey to Blacks and Alexandra last week .as was proposed, as I believe a full team could not get away. A most enjoyable dance was given by the bachelors of the Kawarau Gorge on Friday night last, and was attended by about 25 couples. Perhaps some lady might send a description of some of the charming dresses to “ Cousin Dora ” which were to be seen, worn by those gracefully gliding over the floor. 1 was asked by one or two, who was Belle, over which the usual discussion took place. Some voted for white, some for blue etc., etc., but as the honor of the getting up of the social belongs to the Kawarau Gorge bachelors, I fancy the honor pf Belle also stays over their way. By the was, there was a bunch of mistletoe hanging from the roof, which was brought into use in the good old English fashion, as the room was getting empty by—but no I must not tell tales out of scliopl. We are to have a dance here on the 27th of this month.
