Mount Morgan.
The most famous and most puzzling of all gold mines is the Mount Morgan. It appears, from one of the Sydney papers, that it contributes more precious metal to the world’s treasure than any other patch of the world’s surface of the same extent; Mount Morgan i» supposed to be the product of a thermal spring, and ia simply a mountain of gold, but of gold that has already been treated by Nature. *ln some far off age the hill has been a huge natural crucible, and all the gold it contains has been mined, chemically dissolved, and precipitated by Nature herself. No speck of gold larger than a pin point has ever been discovered in the mount. The precious metal exists in a sort of golden flour, dissolved through iron stone. It was in 1882 that the original finders, stumbled upon Mount Morgan. They noticed that the slope of the hill was scattered over with black stones. curiosity they crushed one or two, and found, as a result, more gold than stone. The very abundance of the precious metal indeed made the discoverers wonder if it could be gold. To-day nearly 200 feet of the mountain have been removed altogether and the remainder is perforated with tunnels, or being quarried out as if it were sandsfcona The company ban taken out within a lew ounces of 37 tons weight of gold, worth almost exactly £5,000,000 sterling.
