STRANDED STEAMER

UNLOADING THE PORT BOWEN. STAGING ERECTED. The discharging of meat from the stranded steamer Port Bowen will start to-day by means of overhead gear from the ship to the shore. The meat will be loaded into lorries and taken to the Wanganui Harbour Board’s cool stores at Castlecliff. The Port Bowen has on board 31,417 carcases of mutton and lamb. A decision has been made to build a staging from the beach to the vessel, which is close inshore. The dumping of coal, which was started on Friday, was continued on Saturday.
