KEEN DISSATISFACTION
MOTOR SPIRIT TAX. NEW PRICES RULING. LESS COMMENT ON INCOME TAX. The chief reaction of the Budget in Te Kuiti appears to be keen disappointment at the decision to raise the benzine tax by such an amount as fourpence. In some quarters there was a suspicion that it might be raised, but twopence was held to be the outside figure. When the news did come through there was a rush to the petrol pumps,. and much talk of the unfairness of this method of loading the cost of the country's defence onto one section of the people. The increase must have a bearing on transport costs. The manner in which the extra fourpence mounts up may be judged by the fact that even in this territory the cost of it seems likely to run up to double figures per week for the very largest operators. The increasing of the income tax was more or less expected, and though there is undoubtedly dissatisfaction, it is not nearly as apparent as that over the increase in petrol taxation. Benzine is selling in Te Kuiti to-day at 2s 6d a gallon for ordinary spirit and 2s 7d a gallon for super.
