PUBLIC BUILDINGS
VOTES IN P.W.D. ESTIMATES. TE KUITI POST OFFICE. POLICE STATION AT PIO PIO. This district has received quite a number of votes for buildings of various types in the Public Works Estimates tabled last evening in the House of Representatives. Once again a vote of £SOOO is made for the construction of the Te Kuiti Post Office —this vote has been on the estimates for many years, but not expended. However, perhaps as evidence that the building is intended to house the Land Development staff, the estimated cost of the work when authorised and the amount required to complete the work, are both set down at £20,000. Provision is also made in the estimates for the building of a staff residence for the P. and T. Department at an estimated cost of £I6OO. A sum of £6OO is set down for the erection of a post office at Mahoenui. Last year the sum of £5505 was expended on the Otorohanga Post Office site, office and residence. A total of £B6OO was voted, and the balance of £3095 has been voted on the 1939-40 estimates. Pio Pio district residents will be interested to hear that the sum of £2OOO has been voted for a police station, probably including a residence, at Pio Pio.
The sum of £SOO is set down for additions to the Te Kniti courthouse, and there is also an item of £4OO for additions to an unspecified Crown residence in Te Kuiti. For improvements to the Waitomo Hostel £IOOO has been allocated. Last year £2OOO was allocated for this purpose, and £628 expended.
