THE GAMING LAWS

AMENDMENTS PROPOSED. LABOUR PARTY PLANS. The issuing of totalisator permits, reinstatement of the double totalisator, telegraphic betting - , and the publication of dividends are among suggestions made by branches of the New Zealand Labour Party, which will come up for discussion at the annual conference of the party at Wellington at Easter. Several branches will move that the conference consider the advisability of amending the Gaming Act to provide for (a) Prohibition of totalisator permits on Labour Day; (b) telegraphic betting (c) reinstatement of the double totalisator; (d) Press publication of dividends; (e) remittance of money to overseas lotteries; (f) totalisator permits being issued to individuals and companies; and that recommendations be made to the Government wherever deemed advisable.

Another suggestion is that the Government be recommended to establish a State lottery on similar lines to that conducted by the Queensland Government,- and that all profits be used for health purposes and other social purposes. Under the heading of licensing laws there appears the following remit: That the Government be recommended to institute an inquiry into the licensing laws, especially as they affect: (a) De-licensed areas; (b) hours of business; (c) breaches of the Act; (d) method of obtaining and transferring licenses; (e) more equitable distribution of licenses; (f) weekly halfholiday for hotels; (g) State control referendum; and to make such amendments as may be necessary.
