OLD BANK NOTES

MANY STILL CIRCULATING. DWINDLING SILVER. According to bank officials in Dunedin, a considerable number of old trading bank notes have still to come in, and, as regards silver, one official said that there were still a few English and Australian coins in circulation, though it was noticeable that English half-crowns, which had diminished more quickly than any other coins, were 'now few and far between. Other coins, however, were considerably fewer in number than was the case a year or even six months ago. On the whole, Australian silver had been dwindling away more rapidly than English silver. Old notes, it was .stated in one bank, are coming in at the rate of approximately 5 per cent, of the total arriving at the bank. Although many notes must have been destroyed, the banks are obliged to pay tax on them just the same as if they were in circulation.
