An explosion shock in the fortyone storey Ritz Towers Hotel, in Park Avenue, occurred to-day, killing or seriously injuring at least a dozen men and blowing out the front of stores and scattering a fortune of jewels in the streets. The explosion occurred in the subbasement. While the firemen were fighting the blaze in the hotel paint shop, five firemen were killed and one injured seriously and is expected to die. Twenty-five other people, including two women and two children, were injured less seriously. The explosion brought down the ceilings and the lower floors of the hotel and blew in the fronts of the shops which lined the street level.
