OLYMPIC GAMES

FURTHER RESULTS. ELLIOTT ELIMINATED. (Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 1.25 p.m.) Los Angeles, August 1. First Semi-Final Heat 100 Metres. —Eddie Tolan (U.S.A.) 1, Daniel Joubert (South Africa) 2, Takayoshi Yoshioka (Japan) 3, Percy Williams (Canada) 4. Time, 10.7 sees. Williams was consequently eliminated, as also was Allan Elliott (New Zealand), who was fifth, Helmuth Koernig (Germany) being sixth. In the second semi-final, the results were: Ralph Metcalfe (U.S.A.) 1, George Simpson (U.S.A.) 2, Arthur Jonath (Germany) 3. Time, 10.6 sees. Carlos Luti (Argentina) was fourth, followed by Pearson (Canada), and Wright (Canada). Three in each semi-final qualified for the final. The 100 metres final resulted:— Tolan 1, Metcalfe 2, Jonath 3. Time, 10 3-10th seconds, equalling Williams' world record and breaking the Olympic record. Simpson was fourth and Joubert fifth. Metcalfe was posted first as victor, but after a long debate the judges decided that. Tolan had won by a shade. Tolan thought he had been defeated and ran over to congratulate his rival, Yoshioka. Williams went to the post thoroughly rested, but his confidence was shattered by his leg, which has troubled him since he pulled a tendon at the Empire games two years ago, this having kent him virtually out of all competitions. The tendon was strained and he lay for hours today in the hot sun massaging it. France Wins Fencing. In the fencing section the French and Italian teams had a deadlock at eight bouts, but the judges gave the decision to France on a single touch. 400 Metres Hurdles.—R. Tisdall (Ireland) won the 400 metre hurdle final, breaking Taylor's world record of 52 sees, by one-fifth of second, but he knocked over one hurdle and was unable to claim the record. Hardin (U.S.A.) was second, Taylor (U.S.A.) third, and Lord Burghley (England) fourth.
