NEW PLYMOUTH ENTERPRISE.
BENEFITS OF THE PORT. THE PRICE OF PETROL. The fact that petrol, for which one paid 23s a case in Hamilton, was only 17s in New Plymouth was quoted yesterday by a Taranaki motorist as one of the benefits which the province was deriving from the growth of the port. Ships fnom America were continually arriving with thousands of cases of oil, and three large firms were establishing big stores in tho town. Wanganui was now supplied with kerosene and benzine from Now Plymouth. There had been no trouble whatever in obtaining the ratepayers’ consent: to the new loan of 1:606,000 for harbour works, although it: was a huge sum for a comparatively small town to raise. He attributed this confidence to the fact that the last loan of £200,000, raised a few years ago, had been paid for out of revenue, no call having been made on the ratepayers at all. It was expected to be able to pay the interest on the new loan in the same way.
