THE JUTLAND CONTROVERSY
ADMIRAL HEARD’S OPINION. 20 MILES OF FIGHTING SHIPS. (P ress Association. —Copyright.) (Received 12.35 p.m.) Perth, this day. Rear-Admiral Heard, who was a passenger by the Osterley, interviewed concerning Admiral Bacon’s criticism of Earl Beatty at Jutland, said the line of fighting ships was 20 miles in length, and it would have been impossible for Earl Beatty to have conveyed more information than he sent by wireless to Lord Jellicoe regarding the movements of the Germans. So long was the fighting line and so disconnected was the British contact with the enemy ships, that it was only guess work to say definitely what course the Germans were steering.
