At the inquest on Joseph Born, a German chemist, who came to England to sell processes for ijho manufacturing synthetically made cocaine and santonin nicotine, a letter was read in winch lie said, “I must die by my own invention, isn’t it funny!” Evidence was given that he had received an offer of £2500 when he had demonstrated his ability to make nicotine, but encountered difficulties and had borrowed money. He wrote to the •chemists with whom lie had been negotiating: “I am sorry to inform you it is now 300 late to accept your offer. 1 have spent all my money. All is lost, myself and children are threatened with being put into the street and I cannot pay rent or buy food. This is my last day.” A verdict! of suicide by poisoning while off unsound mind was returned.
