A new instrument to obtain weather data from the upper atmosphere has been developed in the Unitea States. The device permits accurate measurement of humidity at 99,000 feet, twice as high as previously possible.
The railroads of the United States installed J 577 new locomotives in the first 10 months of 1949, the greatest number for any corresponding period since 1923, the Association of American Railroads reports. About 35,700,000 passenger cars would be in use in (he United States by the end of 1949, the Automobile Manufacturers’ Association estimated Of that number, 14,000,000 were postwar models, less than four years old. Average age of passenger cars on United States highways is now 8.4 years, compared with nine years in 19-16.
