Nominations are invited by the New Zealand Wool Council for the election of two wool-growers’ representatives. The W.A.A.Fs. will hold a dance in the Drill Hall on Saturday night next, in aid of their patriotic appeal effort. The Suburban Hall Committee was to •have held a dance on Saturday, but has generously given wa.y to the W.A.A.Fs., and its dance will be held on the following Saturday at the Suburban Hall. he United States Congress has appropriated the record total of 95,330,000,000 dollars for the financial year 1943-44, which began on July 1 The appropriation is 22,000,000,000 dollars above the original 1943 appropriation, and will probably be heavily increased. Of t-he total 88,143,000,000 dollars are earmarked for war activities. “There still appears to be some misconception as to the present and future role of the Homo Guard,” said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) on Monday .night. “In my statement to the presi of June 26 I made it quite plain thaj, although compulsory parades would -be restricted to one fulF day parade of six hours a quarter, units could arrange additional parades for range practices, for which ammunition would be issued, and any further musters which, it is hoped, they will arrange, especially in the cities, to help in the production of foodstuffs, or otherwise in; the interests of the national war effort.” An inquiry about the position of men released from the Amy for rabbiting was made in the House of Representatives last week by Mr D. C. Kidd (National. Waitaki). In notice of a question to the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. J. G. Barclay), Mr Kidd said that a number of these men would have to return to camp after the winter, and thus could not share in the subsidy scheme which operated in summer. Ho asked whether the Minister would see that the 20 per cent, deduction was paid backto the men who had to return to camp. “Our boys have been fighting for something definite, and it is up to us to see, when they return, that we fulfil the ideals for which they have been fighting,” said Major C. F. Skinner, M.C., member of Parliament for Motueka, who was sworn in as a member of the Executive Council on Monday. “If we do not, the whole fight would be for nothing at all. In other words, if we cannot improve conditions of life here in New Zealand on their return, then their fight has been in vain,” Major Skinner said that to his mind rehabilitation was the- most important subject in New Zealand to-day. The whalers of Te Awaite are having a better season than was the case last year. Possibly the effects of the war-time cessation of Antarctic whalers is now being felt and the .number of whales coming north is on the upgrade.. Whatever the cause 74 whales have so far been killed and brought ashore by tin l Tory Channel whaling party, against a total of 73 last year, and a considerable part of the season still remains. It would seem that there is a fair prospect of beating the most recent high-water mark tally of 198. Marlborough Express.
