THE GENERAL ELECTION

NATIONAL CANDIDATE FOR MARLBOROUGH. PILOT-OFFICER TOM P. SHAND SELECTED. On July 16 t'he National Party delegates met at Blenheim to select a candidate from the four nominees whose names had been subm^ted — Messrs Mackenzie (Happy Valley, Amuri), C. J. Nees (Seddon), J. Y. ►Scales (Kaikoura), and T. P. Shand (Kaikoura). After hearing the candidates the majority was secured by Pilot-Officer Tom P. Shand. At a meeting of the party on Saturday afternoon at Kaikoura it was decided to support his candidature. Pilot-Officer Shand is at present an instructor in the Air Force, and is 32 years of age. He was born in North Otago and educated at Christ’s and Canterbury Colleges, where he secured his Bachelorship of Commerce Degree. Since 1934 he has engaged in farming pursuits in the Blue Duck Valley. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1941, following a period spent in the NelsonMarlborough Mounted Rifles.
