METALLING OF ROADS

QUESTION OF ACCESS MINISTRY OF WORKS REPLY The Ministry of Works, Hamilton, advised the May meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council that it was not likely that they would undertake in conjunction with work for the Lands Department, the metalling of the extension of Pouarua road to give access to Messrs Clark Bros, property at Waitakaruru. "We will be metalling roads in the Pouarua block for the Lands Developments Branch but these are in that part of the block now known as the Kerepehi block and are several miles from the Pouarua road,” stated the letter.

"If your council desires, an item could be included in the year’s public works fund roads estimates for metalling this road on, say, a £2 for £1 basis,” the letter concluded. The chairman, Mr C. W. Parfitt, said that the two sections in question were soldiers’ settlement sections and therefore should be metalled by the Lands Department similarly to the policy adopted for other soldiers’ settlement blocks.

It was decided to advise the Works Department that the council considered that the metalling of the road was the responsibility of the Crown.
