In support of its application the appeal secretary stated that during the war years no difficulty was experienced in raising funds for merchant seamen as they were always in the minds of the people. Their needs were just as great now and in 1950 the organisation hoped to secure worthwhile contributions to assist the men who went down to the sea in ships, said the appeal secretary. It was pointed out by the mayor, Mr. Edwin Edwards, that in accordance with the fixed policy of the council the appeal had 'been declined last year and the council accordingly decided to decline the application.
