MERCURY BAY SCHOOL
FAIR HELD IN THE HALL The children and teachers of the Mercury Bay school held a fair in the hall recently and raised almost £6O towards the fund to improve the school grounds. Mr J. S. Bongard was organiser as Mr Wotherspoon, the headmaster, was unable to assist, through illness. Stalls, sideshows and competitions did a brisk business. Winners of the various competitions were: Mrs Winiata’s cake, Mrs Taylor; Mrs Moss’ cake, Miss Diane Carter; chocolates, Mrs Wotherspoon; picture, Mrs Oxley; toilet set, Mrs Moss; water melon, Mr Cheer; pumpkin, Mrs Russell; honey, Mrs Moss; darts, Mr L. D. Russell; quoits, Mrs Russell and Mr W. Oxley; scallywag, Ted Hughes; pictures, class I,Graham Russell, class 2, Pine Tawhara, class 3, Walter Russell. Several items were given by the children and supper was served by Mesdames Oxley, Meyer, Lee and Miss Betty Robinson. Those in charge of stalls were.— Fruit and vegetables, Miss McCarthy, Jennifer Smith and Margaret Buckton; Books, Lily Pakinga and Ray Newton; cooking, Sharon Meyer; handiwork, Harlean Lowe and Fay Chaney; sweets, Margaret Oxley; quoits, Robin Lee; darts, Gavin Moss; scallywag, Kerry Lee and Tom Arnold; Oriental mystery, Sonia Lee and Jim Jackson; biggest stamp in New Zealand, Peter Clark; fortunetellers, Judith Tunnicliffe and Gladys Buckton; picture ballot, Brian Hughes; rifle range, G. W. Ross; boxin’ match, Ted Hughes; lucky dip, Margaret Buckton.
