PAEROA BEATEN
JOHNSTON CUP MATCH
CHALLENGE FROM WAIHI
RUGBY ON PAEROA DOMAIN
If spectators allowed their concentration to drift from football, and began to discuss the 3d an hour wage increase during- the Johnston Cup Rugby match at the Paeroa domain on Saturday, it is understandable. The game was uninteresting. It would perhaps be unfair to say that Paeroa deserved to lose the cup, but the three points victory to Waihi was a fair indication of the play of both teams. However, if it had not been for the action of F. Treanor, Paeroa’s half, in tripping a Waihi player who was not in possession of the ball, about ten minutes before the end of the game, the challengers would probably have left the field without any score and without the trophy. As it was, though, Mr F. Young, the referee, could not possibly have missed seeing the infringement and he allowed Waihi the advantage, so that instead of the penalty kick being taken from almost at the halfway line it was kicked from about the twenty-five and easily put over. Throughout the game both teams were obviously keen to win, but the display was ragged. Paeroa’s pack, although it did not get its share, of the scrums, did plenty of work. For some reason or other, however, the back line was not on form.
The most energetic man in Paeroa’s backs was Ray Laurent. In fact of the two teams, Laurent’s was possibly the best game of the day. A splendid effort was made by him in the second spell when he crossed the Waihi line and fell on the bail, but apparently he failed to touch down.
R. Adams, whose game is usually flawless, handled the ball well on Saturday, but many of his kicks were not up--to his best. The teams were:—
Paeroa:' R. Adams, G. Vuglar, R. Laurent, T. Williams, R. Kemp, R. Kere, P. Gregson, F. Treanor, R. Jessen, K. Barrett, S. Wheeler, R. Milne, S. Locke, W. Hopping and M. Morrison.
Waihi: K. Rapley, G. Hancock, D. Hume, M. Davies, R. Pascoe, Diggleman, Newlands, L. Rudd, M. Potier, D. McHardy-, J. Bloar, D. Sampson, R. Sampson, B. McCarthy and H. Ashby. VETERANS BEATEN WEST WINS 16—9 In their annual Rugby match on the Paeroa domain on Saturday the Veterans proved they were able to give sound opposition to the West team. Although in the first spell West was able to score 13 points against Veterans’ 6, in the second half Veterans’ defence was surprisingly good and there were only three points added to each side, the final score being West 16, Veterans 9.
The referee was Mr A. Ripley.
UNITED AND HIKUTAIA

The best Rugby match of the afternoon, was played between United and Hikutaia, on the No. 2 ground of’the Paeroa domain on Saturday afternoon. The teams were evenly matched and both sides played hard games. At half-time the score was three all, but the end of the game came with United winning' 6 points to 3. The referee was Mr H. Grant. HOWICK DEFEATED JUNIOR B WINS The visiting Howick Rugby team was beaten by the Paeroa Junior B team on the Paeroa Domain on Saturday. In a hard game the score at the close was Paeroa 9, Howick 3. Mr W. A. Geary was the referee.
