HOUSES FOR ROADMEN

PROBLEM IN THE COUNTY REFLECTS! ON STATE OF ROAD At the September meeting of the Coromandel County Council, CT. W. Hamilton spoke of the excellent state of the Tapu road and compared it with the council road: maintenance, particularly on the Coromandel-Mercury Bay road. He said that the water tables were cleaned out, scrub cut back and cleared. On being' questioned, he said that six men had been working on it. Or. A. Watkins bore out what CT. Hamilton had said, but of course there was l plenty of labour. There had been a great improvement over a preiod of years. The answer was that a man not .living in the middle of his stretch of road could not do the same amount of work as one who was. It was more than one man could do.

It was suggested that the council go into the question of housing roadmen on their sections. The housing of roadmen reflects on the roads throughout the county.

The chairman, Mi 1 E. Deeble, said he hoped to put something definite before the council at the next meeting with regard to housing problems for county roadmen. At present the foreman was doing his best under difficult conditions.
