PUPILS AT PAEROA SCHOOL MORE ROOMS NEEDED HOUSES FOR TEACHERS The regular monthly meeting of the <Paeroa District High School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening. The chairman, Mr C. C. Webb, presided over Messrs J. H. Walmsley, A. F. Thorp, A. 0. H. Allison, P. Williams and the secretary, Mr iR. J. W. Clark. The headmaster, Mr G. M. Ruscoe, was also in attendance. Apologies were received from Messrs l 'S. Wheeler, T. I. Jenkins and H. H. Follas-.
'ln response to repeated requests from the committee on this subject, advice was received from the Minister of Education that the Education Department was prepared to consider building houses for married assistant teachers. It was pointed out that already there was one married assistant, with three young children, without- suitable accommodation. Two other married assistants would- shortly .be released from active service with the forces and would each require homes. It was- resolved that the committee make application to the department, pointing out the urgent need for houses and request that at least three homes be provided in Paeroa. Headmaster’s Residence It was resolved that the board be requested to consider, as soon -as circumstances permit, the erection of a new headmaster’s residence commensurate with the status of the school. The headmaster reported that in spite of the addition of the two new rooms at the high school, the accommodation was l still severely taxed. Teachers were endeavouring to handle classes of up to 60' -pupils, and- the task did' not allow the necessary individual attention to pupils. It was resolved to advise the board of the position, and to request that plans- be made for additions' to the school at an early date.
Accounts totalling £4O 3s 8d were passed for payment. Entrances To High School
It was resolved to approach the Paeroa Borough Council regarding providing sealed access' paths from the highway to the school gates at the high school.
lit was- agreed to hold a working bee of committee members and teachers on -Saturday morning to clear the benches and equipment from the old science room. When cleared, this room will provide a classroom. AU that would be required would be heating equipment, and the committee has made arrangements to procure this. It was resolved to forward a letter of sympathy and condolence •to Mr S. Wheeler who had suffered bereavement by the loss of his mother.
