CHURCH FAREWELL

PRESENTATION MADE MR & MRS BAIN HONOURED GOOD WISHES OF PARISHIONERS There was a very large gathering of parishioners of St. Mary’s Churcn, Paeroa, on Monday evening last when a farewell was arranged in the schoolroom to pay tribute to Mr and Mrs W. Bain who have left Paeroa to reside in’Hikutaia, The function took the form of a social evening, items being presented by the choir, Miss K. Kelly, Miss M-. McClinchy, Miss M. Murray, Miss R. Smith, Mrs .Caswell and Mr and Mrs E. Kahn. Mr Kahn was master of ceremonies. After a dainty supper had been served Rev.. Father W. O’Meara, in addressing the gathering said he was pleased to see such a large number present which was proof of the esteem in which the Bain family was held. On behalf of the parishioners he referred in eulogistic terms to Mr and Mrs Bain’s services to the parish and expressed regret at their leaving the town. They had proved themselves energetic workers in all matters pertaining to the Church and had always been to the forefront m parish affairs. They had shown kindness and sympathy to those in distress and were always at hand when needed. Mrs Bain,. continued Father O’Meara, was a foundation member and one time president of the Catholic Women’s League. Chiming Clock Presented On behalf of the parishioners a presentation of a chiming clock was made to the guests of honour by Father

O’Meara who also presented Mrs- Bain with- a book from the members of the league. Miss S. Gordon was the recipient of a small gift from the parishioners. Both ladies were also presented with bouquets. The ' Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, who was also -present, thanked Father O’Meara for the invitation to be associated with the farewell and expressed regret at the departure of the Bain family from Paeroa. Both were held in high esteem by all who knew them, said Mr Edwards and on behalf of the citizens he thanked them for the services they had rendered to Paeroa, both of whom had spent practically a lifetime in the town. He wished them every happiness in their new home. Not Going Far Away Other speakers who added their quota of good wishes were Messi’s T. A. Barrett, J. J. Poland, M. Crimmins and.M. -Crosby.

Mr Bain who replied on behalf of himself. Mrs Bain and Miss Gordon, thanked the various speakers for their kind remarks and the parishioners for the gifts which were greatly appreciated. Whenever they looked at the clock, added- Mr Bain, it would remind them of many happy days spent in Paeroa. They were only going a few miles away and would still look upon Paeroa as their town.. Mrs Bain also replied and thanked the league members for the gift and for the happy times spent together. The evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.
