A MEMORY.
Would I might stay The unbidden flying rapture Of one golden day—one purple grapebloom. night. The hidden memory of a wild sweet time, Swift as the span of a cloudlet’s flight Asweep the sun—ended ere it scarce begun. Or snatch again the enchantment of those fleeting hours All bathed in wistful gold While moonlight brushed mysterious
rain On dusty stars, the night’s exotic
flowers. When just at last I gladly caught A glimmering vision of your soul And madly thought to hold Complete possession of the whole. Blit the heavenly tension of that moment’s capture, Snapped the sudden sweet ache my
heart beset— Sublime, brief ecstasy was mine—this
rapture Which faded like a fragile floweret. —E.M.
