THE STORY OF OIL.
INTERESTING LECTURE.
“Oils and Lubrication” formed the subject of an interesting and instructive address presented by Mr F. S. Stephens, B.Sc., A.C.S.E., x of the Vacuum Oil Company’s Technical Department, in the Soldiers’ Club Hall, Paeroa, on Wednesday evening. There was a large attendance, and the lecture was followed with keen interest. A feature that was very instructive was the demonstration, by means of a miniature apparatus of the actual distillation of petrol, kerosene, ricating oils, and other products from the raw material.
The lecturer illustrated by means of films, many of the modern uses of petroleum products, the way in which it is won from the ground, refined and its distribution throughout the world.
An interesting film illustrated in cartoon form exactly how a car engine is constructed and operated. It also showed graphically the cause and effect of some common troubles, owing to the use of unsuitable oil and fuel. The explanation of the action of the internal combustion engine and motor car mechanism was followed through with keen interest.
The concluding film showed a sister industry—the rubber industry—which uses large quantities of petroleum products. The processes of tyre making, from the raw material to the finished product, were shown in a most interesting manner. After answering a number of ques-? tions, chiefly on the subject of oils, a vote of thanks, proposed by Mr E. Edwards, was accorded to the speaker by acclamation.
