MILITARY TRAINING.
APPLICATION FOR EXEMPTION.
GARAGE WORKER'S PLEA.
At the local Police Court on Monday, before Mr F. W. Platts, S.M., a youth named W. J. Dent applied for exemption from -military service under the Defence Act on the grounds that owing to iris employment in local garage he was required to work from 12 noon until 8 p.m. daily. In addition there were two other garage hands employed by the firm and the applicajit was unable to attend the parades.
The application was opposed bj' the Defence Department, for which Staff Sergeant-Major A. Steward appeared. In support of the objaction it was stated that there were- other boys who were required to undertake work in the evenings, but that satisfactory arrangements had ben made for them to carry out their military training. In answer to the Sergeant-Major Dent stated that he could not get away before 8 p.m. without paying a substitute, and he could not afford to do that.
The Magistrate : No, I do not suppose so.
In answer to the Bench Dent said that he was quite; prepared to attend parades after S p.m. The magistrate thereupon directed that so long as the applicant was engaged in his present employment he would be. granted exemption up till 8 o’clock on parade nights.
