CORRESPONDENCE.

COUNCIL AND UNEMPLOYMENT. (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln regard to the above, a letter signed “Failplay” appeared in your issue of the 29th ultimo. The writer would have simplified matters hail he had the courage to reveal his identity. It is just possible that he is a bona fide champion of the cause c-f the unemployed, particularly where married men are concerned. On such assumption he would have been well advised to have addressed himself in the first instance to the manager of the quarry with a view to obtaining the facts of the case. Instead of that fie allows himself, to be misjudged by ex-parte statements, and consequently stultifies his zeal by framing a casj e which can only be characterised as a tergiversation of the plain truth. On the other hand it is quite probable that “Fairplay” is one whom I was compelled to discharge for reasons best known to himself. It suits a certain style of man to shelter behind wife and children. Apart from the necessity of shortening hands or the ease of insubordination, no man fit for the job who did an honest day’s work has ever been discharged by me. It is unthinkable in these days of financial stress and domestic want that a married man would be discharged for any but unavoidable causes. Quarrying is arduous work. One cannot employ men who are unfit for it. Neither can one employ more than the business will warrant. As, regards contracts for supply of metal which “ Fairplay ” would divert from this quarry, permit me to say that we hope to maintain the connection that fair and straight dealing has ensured us. Besides, the market is wide and our metal'needs no advertisement —it speaks for itself. R. G. ME'RLO.
