CAVALRY ATTACK

A SUCCESS CLAIMED.

The “Telegraph’s” Barcelona correspondent says that rebel machine gunners, withholding fire till the last moment, scattered a loyalist cavalry attack between Teruel and Morelia! The Spanish press agency announces from Barcelona that loyalist divisions not onlj- stemmed the rebel offensive, but took the initiative in the Ebro, Segre and Pyrenees sectors, inflating heavy losses on Italians when the latter attempted to counter-attack. Moreover, the loyalist front remains intact between Teruel and Montalban, while the loss of Aliaga is denied. The Barcelona correspondent of the “Telegraph’’ corroborates, that the loyalists are withstanding the rebels on the Levante front.

ON TERUEL SECTOR

According to the Burgos correspondent of “The Times” a communique reveals that as a lesulfc of a surprise offensive on the Teruel front nearly 30U square miles of mountain territory have keen occupied. A single shot rang out at 8 a.m. on Saturday, a signal for hundreds of {runs to enter action. Eighty aeroplanes co-operated. The Republicans’ lines crumpled along a wide front. The Saragossa correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that General Franco' again demonstrated that he possesses sufficient resources to concentrate a superior force almost anywhere. After thorough - and secret 5 preparations the Castillians broke theGovernuient lines in three places and advanced a depth of 13 miles. : Government reserves were rushed up., but failed to stem the advance.

REBEL OFFENSIVE. (Received this day at 1.0 p.m.). LONDON, April 27. The “Telegraph’s” Barcelona correspondent says the rebel offensive against Teruel is due to General Franco’s realisation that an attempt to conquer Catalonia has failed, necessitating the prolongation of the war. He has therefore abandoned Barcelona as an objective, and is concentrating a drive on Valencia, via Castellon Delapana.
