NAVAL GUNNERY
PRACTICE TN GULF

AUCKLAND, April 27
A comprehensive range of gunnery practices was carried out during oxer-,, cises in the Hauraki Gulf this week by the Achilles, flagship of the Now Zealand Division, and the Le,under. They returned to port, with the Imperial escort vessel Wellington, which towed a floating target, to-day. On board
the Achilles, as the guest of Rear-Ad-miral the Hon E. R. Drummond, whs the Minister for Defence (Hon F. Jones), and several gunnery officers from the Defence Department. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the exercises was the practice conducted on Tuesday night, when the bursting of star shells and the use of powerful searchlights made an imnressive display in conjunction with firing from both ships. A concentration shoot: was conducted, and the Achilles fired 40 rounds Iron, emb iron. Higb-amde practices and half-inch machine-gun work were also ineluded in the programme. The reverberation of the guns could be heard distantly in Auckland. Alter returning with the floating target. the Wellington, accompanied by tlu : Leith, left for the gulf, en route 1o Sydney, whore they will remain until June 10. They will then start their annual winter cruise.to the South Sea Island*. j
